Training

Dinghy sailing training and Power boat training is available for adults and youngsters through the Pevensey Bay Sailing Club (PBSC) Academy. This is the primary training section of Pevensey Bay Sailing Club (P.B.S.C.)

The Academy
PBSC Academy is an RYA Recognised Training Centre (RTC) and its aim is to introduce and promote sailing, in all its forms, in a safe and friendly club environment. The Academy is an important and integral part of the Club and as such supports all it’s endeavours.

Extracts from the Club’s mission statement

  • Shall promote sailing to develop a lifelong appreciation for sailing as an environmentally sustainable leisure and healthy lifestyle activity.
  • Will promote a high level of skill and seamanship in the handling of small craft.
  • Will aim to improve the caliber of racing at the club.

Adult Courses
The Academy offers evening classes to adult (18 years +) club members on Tuesdays and Thursdays through the Spring and Summer months, and Saturday classes in Spring and Autumn.

Tuesday evenings and Saturdays are generally dedicated to beginners with students working towards RYA Level 1 and 2 certificates. Thursday evening courses are for those who have already completed the Level 2 course and include more advanced course material such as Start Racing, Seamanship and Spinnaker Handling. At the end of the courses in early August, there is a weeklong Sailing Camp in Chichester Harbour, organised by the instructors, and all students are invited to attend.

The Spring and Autumn Saturday courses are arranged to meet the requirements of new members joining during the season. These courses are usually preceded by ‘Taster’ days, when experienced club sailors introduce non-members to sailing.

Eligibility - Courses are for club members only. However you can join the club at the time of enrolling for a course and our course fees take this into consideration. All applicants must be 18 years or over, able to swim and be confident in water.

Cadet Training - The Academy runs a comprehensive Cadet Training scheme, with youngster from the ages of about six to eighteen being catered for, from beginner to National Squad members. The training is offered free to club members, but younger cadets up to the age of twelve must for an adult at the club during training. See Cadet Training section and Cadet Calendar for further details.

Course Fees - Sailing Academy course fees for current club members is £90 for evening courses (14 x 3hrs) and £40 for Saturday courses (4 x 3hrs). For those joining the club and signing on for the course at the same time, the club entrance fee of £30 will be taken as part payment for the course. For club subscriptions see Membership.
