The Club Pevensey Bay sailing Club is a non-profit making club run by its members who comprise dinghy and board sailors plus cruiser sailors from the nearby Sovereign Harbour. A vibrant club with around 350 members of all ages.
The clubhouse is situated on a very quiet section of coastline between Eastbourne Sovereign Harbour and Pevensey Bay with access via a private road. Facing the sea just above the high water mark, the club has private beaches and its own large car park.
For information about finding the club, please see our Location page.
Club Facilities The club offers changing facilities with hot showers, a galley that serves anything from a quick snack to a full lunch and a well stocked bar. There is a large clubroom and a balcony facing the sea where non-sailing members can relax and watch the activities on the water.
Dinghies can be kept in a dinghy park, which is only a few metres from the sea. Sailboards and dinghy sails can be stowed on racks in a secure container, subject to availability. Winches are provided to ease the task of hauling dinghies up the beach.
The club owns a number of boats available for hire to members. These range from Toppers and Picos to Asymmetrics and Cats.
Adjacent to the car park is a large grassed area where members are permitted to pitch tents at the weekend.
Club Sailing Events
The club organises dinghy racing most weekends from April through to Christmas. Members are encouraged to join in class or handicap races but can free sail if they prefer. Cruiser races are organised, on a bi-weekly basis, on Sunday mornings.
Sail Training Within the club is Pevensey Bay Sailing Academy. This is an RYA Recognised Training
Establishment (RTE) which offers courses run by a team of qualified instructors on weekday evenings for club members. On Saturdays there is supervised cadet sailing for the children of family members.
For more information see Training page.
Safety Cover
The club owns four safety boats to provide cover for all sailors. These include two large and one small RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boats) that are easy to launch. While racing is in progress, during cadet sailing on Saturday and during training courses, at least one safety boat is always on the water. At other times a safety boat is made ready for launch at a moments notice should a member (or non-member come to that) get into difficulties. From time to time, the club organises certified Power Boat courses to ensure that most members are competent to helm a safety boat.
Championships and Open Meetings The club is recognised for its ability to lay on major sailing events and to provide highly qualified race officers. We host open meeting and championships for various dinghy classes about three times a year. The club is also a favoured venue for UKWA boardsailing events.
Social Events
The club organises a number of social events throughout the sailing season for members and their guests. The highlights are typically a Summer Ball, a Halloween Party and a Laying Up Dinner. These are augmented by various quiz and games nights, disco and many an ad-hoc barbecue on balmy Saturday evenings in mid-summer. Special events and parties are also laid on for the children.
One particular sailing + social event, very popular with family members, is Sea Week held in August. This is basically a summer camp when families camp in the club grounds and water sports events are organised each day for children and adults.
For full details of forth-coming social events, please go to the Social Events page.
Affiliations Pevensey Bay Sailing Club is a member of the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) and the East Sussex Coastal Sailing Federation (ESCSF) which comprises Sussex coastal clubs between Rye and Seaford. Member clubs take it in turn to host an annual regatta in which ESCSF clubs compete for the Federation Cup.
Membership The club welcomes sailors of all ages and abilities. Individual, Husband and Wife (or partners) and Family memberships are available. Family memberships are actively encouraged, with the younger family members invited to take part in the Saturday supervised cadet sailing.
